On October 1, 2012, Green Mountain College in Vermont announced that it was going to slaughter its longtime oxen team Bill and Lou and, according to its mission of food sustainability, serve them as hamburger in the school's cafeteria. What ensued was more explosive and far-reaching than anyone could have predicted. Immediately animal advocates entered the fray, sanctuaries offering to take the oxen in and anonymous donors to make up for the lost revenue. As the public dialogue intensified, activists and students engaged in a battle fought not only in the pasture but across social media, spreading to the entire world. And in the midst of it all were Bill and Lou, "magnificent creatures—an embodiment of power, with long horns and formidable muscle under coats the color of creamed coffee." Historian James McWilliams closely follows the players, from GMC's president and faculty to leading animal rights thinkers, as he investigates the political workings of a small agricultural college, the inherent flaws of ecological sustainability, and the ethical implication of eating animals. No matter what side of the debate one falls on, this case study poses vital and provocative questions long after the controversy has died down.

The Politics of the Pasture edition by James McWilliams Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

I have read this so-called "book" and it is one of the most biased and uninformed missives I have ever read. McWilliams has had a near pathological obsession with Green Mountain College and it shows in this work. Frankly, I am rather disappointed that such a man in academia would resort to ad hominem attacks against a college he's never visited, faculty he's never engaged and students especially.

The saddest part about this whole saga is that McWilliams himself pimped his audience for positive reviews in his own blog, apparently because he wasn't getting the reviews he liked. Quite naturally the audience that hangs on his very words have voted up this work.

It's a sad commentary that such actions have taken place. Here's a link to the blog entry in question

I found this book to be very good in its reporting of the Green Mountain College debate over slaughtering its oxen team Bill and Lou. I had followed this story in a few papers and it was great to then find McWilliams' book. This is / was a very highly emotional debate and it was wonderful to read McWilliams' dissecting the issue, adding his own perspective, and the perspective of others involved. I found this book to be very well written and honest. I can very well see this publication used as a text in colleges for various studies (law, journalism, animal rights, ethics, education, social media, etc., etc) in the future. My only complaint I wish I could order a printed version.
I've read Politics of Pasture in less than 3 days. First, I have to note how well-written this book is. It's a real thriller with fascinating characters. But beyond that, it's the most up-to-date reflection I've read about our relationship to animals and the value of their life. Through Bill and Lou's story, we come across the main arguments for small scale and sustainable farming only to realize it's just a cute packaging of industrial farming built to reduce our cognitive dissonance and guilt when we eat meat. The current sustainable farming movement lacks one important thing compassion. And through Bill and Lou's story, every reader will come to realize the pleasure we have eating meat is a luxury that doesn't worth the life of sentient beings. In this book, we also realize the vegan movement is not an extremist organisation. It's just a group of people that have aligned their values - values shared by most of us - to their practice.

A book that all environmentalists and meat lovers should read.
I just finished reading James McWilliams' latest book and I must say that I enjoy his writing very much. This book is an outstanding contribution to the animal rights activism cause and it clearly exposes the faulty logic and slippery behavior of those who benefit from the exploitation of animals. I just hope that the truth about Lou's "euthanasia" sometime will come to light and that those responsible for his death are brought to justice. I am very much looking forward to his next book!
The issue of what constitutes "ethical treatment" of animals raised for food has become practically de rigueur among food writers in recent years. But with "The Politics of Pasture," author and historian James McWilliams approaches the debate from a different perspective the viewpoint of two "working animals" who suddenly became worth more dead than alive at Green Mountain College (GMC), which for a decade exploited their strength and compliant nature to pull a plow. The oxen, Bill and Lou, were supposedly beloved by the students and faculty, yet when Lou injured his leg while struggling under the yoke, campus administrators casually declared both animals would be slaughtered and placed on the school menu. The college was a model of "sustainable farming," they argued, and as such Bill and Lou must move to the next stage of their usefulness feeding the students who supposedly loved them.

In clear and engaging prose, McWilliams unpacks the defensive rhetoric offered by GMC and the college's supporters and systematically dismantles it, often using examples from other social justice movements. Moreover, he demonstrates how the concept of "sustainability" is gradually being appropriated and used to redirect or even obliterate other, more important, animal rights issues. Much of the discussion surrounding Bill and Lou -- as well as the efforts of VINE farmed animal sanctuary in Vermont to save them -- was chronicled on his website as events unfolded in the summer and fall of 2012 (he hosted well-reasoned justifications for both positions), making McWilliams uniquely qualified to present what is without doubt a significant contribution to the dialogue about where sustainability ends and our moral obligation to sentient beings begins.
McWilliams reveals the double-speak of the business of exploitation, even at the education level. A college that is supposed to be environmentally friendly sides with the factory farms in its retoric, instead of engaging in an intelligent conversation. University administrators stuck to the "ivory tower" approach and refused to engage concerned citizens, labeling "concern" for Bill and Lou as "radical".
Incredible. I plan to recommend this to everyone I know.
